Hello everyone, welcome back to the No Skip Blog! Today we are sharing the breaking news that founding guitarist of Bowling For Soup, Chris Burney, will be stepping down from the band effective immediately.
The news came very suddenly on January 23rd through a post made by the band via their Instagram, the post stated;
“It is with a heavy heart we announce that Chris Burney has made the decision to retire from his stage-right post in the band he co-founded in 1994.
Some recent medical developments, 30 years of rocking balls and touring non-stop have made it difficult to continue. We are bummed to not have Chris by our sides, but absolutely support his decision.
The future of Bowling For Soup remains bright.
The three of us will carry on, with Chris’ blessing, and continue to build the legacy of this band we all love so much. We will not be replacing Chris or touring with a touring guitarist. You cannot replace a legend. We were brothers when we started this journey… and brothers we remain.
See you at the shows and in your ears.”
The statement has left many shocked, including us, as it comes just a month before the band is slated to tour the 20th anniversary of their sixth studio album, A Hangover You Don't Deserve, amongst other performances outside this tour. As far as anyones been concerned, talks of this change haven’t really surfaced until this post, but after 30 years and recent health complications Chris deserves his time to rest.
While beginning as a four piece in 1994, the now trio has promised to continue the bands legacy without Chris, maybe alluding to continued new music regardless of losing their founding guitarist. But, all anyone can ask for is that the retirement was mutual and the band will continue on for as long as the other members want to take it and keep Chris’s memories and contributions alive.
Even if Chris is leaving on a high note and the band is unphased by the change it still begs the question, will their live performances be the same with an empty spot filling the stage-right post?

As always, thanks for reading and happy listening!
